PCF's Phantom Art Collection Revealed: 150 Works, Not a Treasure Trove

The French Communist Party (PCF) holds a lesser-known art collection, contrary to popular fantasies of a secret treasure. The collection, comprising about 150 works, is primarily owned by the Paris federation rather than the national party. Initiated in the 1970s by a cultural commission led by painter Jean-Pierre Jouffroy, a co-founder of the Syndicat national des artistes plasticiens, the collection sought donations from engaged artists. Notable contributors include members of the Coopérative des Malassis, Henri Cueco, Lucien Fleury, Michel Parré, and Chilean surrealist Roberto Matta, who donated 'Les Travailleurs de la mère'.
