Parthenon’s western facade restored to original form after 220 years

For the first time in nearly 220 years, the Parthenon’s western facade is visible to visitors at the Acropolis in Athens as a complete entity. On Thursday, the Greek Ministry of Culture announced the successful restoration of the temple’s western gable, which included the installation of two new marble blocks into previously empty spaces at the western end—the first sight for those arriving at the historic site. The 2,500-year-old structure, which attracted around 4.6 million visitors last year, has been undergoing extensive restoration to address damage caused by warfare, weather, and theft. Culture Minister Lina Mendoni described the outcome as “truly stunning,” emphasizing that the new stones reveal the unique proportions and geometric perfection of the Parthenon’s western face.
