Paleontologists Discover Unexpected Fossil Collection in Texas Submerged Cave

Researchers John Moretti and John Young have uncovered a significant collection of fossilized animal remains in Bender's Cave, an underground stream system in Comal County, Texas. The discoveries, detailed in a paper published on March 19 in Quaternary Research, include bones, teeth, a giant ground sloth claw, tortoise shell fragments, and armor from a pampathere—an ancestor of armadillos. Several species, such as the giant tortoise and pampathere, had not previously been documented in this region of Texas. The fossils were found scattered along the stream bed during six expeditions conducted between March 2023 and November 2024, requiring the use of snorkeling gear due to water levels. The researchers hypothesize that the animals lived approximately 100,000 years ago during a warmer interglacial period, based on the preferred habitats of the extinct creatures. This finding challenges existing assumptions that Central Texas was primarily a dry, cool grassland during the Ice Age, suggesting instead a warmer, forested environment. The fossils' deposition is thought to have occurred through sinkholes during erosion events, though precise dating is complicated by chemical alterations from prolonged submersion. The discovery provides new insights into the prehistoric ecosystems of Central Texas and raises questions about the area's climatic history.
