Opéra Garnier renovation extended to five years, reopening pushed to 2032

The renovation of the Palais Garnier by the Opéra national de Paris has been prolonged from two years to five, with a new reopening date set for 2032. This extension arises from recent technical evaluations that necessitate a more comprehensive lead treatment approach. Additionally, the modernization of the Opéra Bastille, which was initially slated to begin in 2030, has been pushed back to 2033. The initiative 'Nouvelle Ère, Nouvel Air,' unveiled in September 2025 by then-Culture Minister Rachida Dati, is projected to cost €600 million through 2037. Funding will come from both public and private entities, including Chanel and Fondation BNP Paribas. For two years, heritage visit areas may be closed, potentially resulting in a €13 million annual revenue loss. This renovation aims to rectify decades of neglect, as significant structural work has not been undertaken since 1875.
