Open Call for Research Papers on Post-2000 Exhibition Practices in China and Southeast Asia

The Guangdong Times Museum has issued an open call for research papers as part of its third assembly titled 'From a History of Exhibitions Towards a Future of Exhibition-Making,' focusing on exhibition-making practices in China and Southeast Asia after 2000. The call invites researchers to submit papers that examine exhibition histories rather than art history, aiming to foster critical discourse on less-discussed topics and highlight shifts in the art systems of these regions since the turn of the millennium. Key themes include the role of the private sector in shaping art institutions, the expansion of the art market, the proliferation of biennials and art prizes, and the concept of 'internationalism' that balances national representation with transnational collaborations. The assembly, organized by Biljana Ciric and Nikita Yingqian Cai, is scheduled for December 2019, with the exact date to be confirmed. It will explore issues such as the institutionalization of contemporary art, the standardization of exhibition formats, the blurring lines between museum displays and commercial shows, and the impact of Western institutions in the region. The event builds on previous assemblies, including one on 1990s practices, and is co-organized with the Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai.
