Normandy Beaches and Languedoc Fortresses Vie for UNESCO World Heritage Status
France has put forward two nominations for UNESCO World Heritage recognition: the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy and the royal fortresses located in Languedoc. The 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee is taking place in Busan, South Korea, and will continue until July 29, 2026. The Normandy nomination features Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches, along with Pointe du Hoc, parts of the Atlantic Wall, and the Mulberry B harbor. Meanwhile, the Languedoc nomination consists of eight castles, which have been reclassified from "Cathar castles" to "royal fortresses" from the 13th century. Both proposals have received recommendations from ICOMOS, with the Languedoc initiative starting in 2013 and Normandy's in 2008. France's initial UNESCO inscriptions occurred in 1979.
