New Study of Otford Roman Villa Wall Plaster at Maidstone Museum

Ann Isenberg, an archaeologist, has conducted a detailed study of painted wall plaster fragments from the Otford Roman Villa in Kent, now held by Maidstone Museum. The villa, excavated in 1926-27, yielded fragments featuring incised Latin verse from Virgil's Aeneid, which are now in the British Museum. Isenberg's project focused on the remaining 37 kilos of plaster, examining the techniques of the ancient painters (pictores) and the decorative schemes. Key findings include evidence of multiple figure panels, use of compasses for motifs, and the identification of two consecutive lines of Latin verse, unusual for Roman Britain. The study also highlights the smoothness of the lime plaster and the use of fresco technique. Isenberg's work raises questions about the identity and skills of the artisans, the dating of the villa (with conflicting views from J.P. Bushe-Fox and Bertram Pearce), and the social significance of the decoration. The project underscores the importance of re-examining archaeological collections and the insights they provide into Roman provincial art and culture.
