New Pygmy Pipehorse Species Discovered in South African Waters

Researchers from the Australian Museum and Iziko South African Museum have documented a previously unknown species of pygmy pipehorse in subtropical South Africa. Named Cylix nkosi, this marine creature was located in the waters near Sodwana Bay and represents the first instance of its genus found on the African continent. The identification was achieved through field studies, micro-CT scanning, and genetic testing, revealing the species has been genetically distinct for millions of years. This discovery enhances knowledge of marine biodiversity in the Western Indian Ocean and highlights the need for further exploration of coral reef ecosystems.
