New monograph reexamines Lilia Carrillo's place in Mexican modern art

Americas Society's Art division has unveiled a new artist monograph titled Lilia Carrillo: Todo es sugerente (Everything Is Suggestive), produced in partnership with the Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes. This publication provides a significant reevaluation of Carrillo, a pivotal member of Mexico’s Generación de la Ruptura, a postwar collective of artists who contested the prevalence of Mexican muralism and paved the way for abstraction. Born in Mexico City in 1930, Carrillo emerged as a leading female artist within this movement until her untimely passing in 1974. The monograph, released by one of Mexico's foremost institutions dedicated to modern and contemporary Mexican art, contextualizes Carrillo’s contributions within the broader cultural, political, and artistic transformations of 20th-century Mexico.
