New Gaudí Museum to Open in Barcelona by 2028

Barcelona will open a new museum dedicated to Antoni Gaudí by 2028, housed in the Colegio de las Teresianas (Col·legi de Santa Teresa), one of the architect's earliest works built between 1888 and 1890. The announcement was made by the Barcelona city council during the centenary of Gaudí's death on June 10, 1926, just days before Pope Leo XIV's visit to consecrate the Jesus Tower at the Sagrada Família. The Vatican approved the conversion of the religious school into a museum, marking the first public access to the building. The project emphasizes spirituality in Gaudí's life and work, with a modern museography by Arquitectura Genis Planelles and immersive audiovisual technology by Ingeniería Cultural, including virtual reality reconstructions. Physical models and original documents will also be displayed. The museum is part of Barcelona's 'Any Gaudí' program in 2026, which includes events in Barcelona, Reus, and Mataró, organized by the Generalitat de Catalunya. A joint exhibition on Gaudí, Joan Miró, and Joaquim Gomis is planned by Casa Batlló and Fundació Joan Miró. The new museum joins existing Gaudí sites like Casa Museu Gaudí and the Sagrada Família Museum, seven of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Gaudí's beatification process, declared 'venerable' by Pope Francis in 2025, remains stalled pending a recognized miracle.
