New Frog Species Discovered in Victoria Through Citizen Science Program

Researchers have identified a previously unknown frog species in southern Victoria's Otway Plains and Ranges. The Otway Smooth Frog (Geocrinia sparsiflora) was distinguished from similar species through analysis of over 800 audio recordings submitted to the Australian Museum's FrogID program, combined with genetic and morphological studies. This small amphibian exhibits distinctive flower-like spots and has a unique reproductive pattern where eggs develop on land before hatching in water. While currently abundant in both natural and modified habitats, scientists express concern about its limited geographic range and vulnerability to climate change impacts. The formal classification will enable future conservation assessments for this newly recognized species.
