New Book 'Women Photographers Are Dangerous' Spotlights Over 60 Pioneering Female Photographers

On September 5, ACC Art Books will publish 'Women Photographers Are Dangerous,' a detailed anthology honoring the impact of more than 60 women photographers from the 19th century to today. Curated by historians Laure Adler and Clara Bouveresse, the volume showcases 100 significant photographs, featuring notable artists like Eve Arnold, Vivian Maier, and Anne Atkins. The collection covers a range of topics, including war, politics, feminist activism, art, science, journalism, and advertising, emphasizing the crucial yet often neglected contributions of women in photography. Iconic images such as Arnold's portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Maier's posthumously discovered street photography, and Atkins' pioneering cyanotypes are included. The book also highlights works by Julia Margaret Cameron, Dorothea Lange (notably her 'Migrant Mother'), and Frances Benjamin Johnston, celebrating the bold spirit of these photographers who defied conventions. It traces women's roles in photography back to Louis Daguerre's invention of the camera in 1838, illustrating their enduring presence in the field.
