Neri Oxman's Comprehensive Monograph 'Mediated Matter' to Launch in November 2025
A major publication documenting the career of designer Neri Oxman will be released on November 18, 2025. The book, titled 'Mediated Matter: Design and Invention in the New Biological Age,' represents the first complete collection of her work over the past twenty years. It compiles her research and projects developed while leading The Mediated Matter Group at the MIT Media Lab. The volume includes more than 1,200 photographs, previously unseen drawings, laboratory records, and written commentary. Oxman's approach, known as Material Ecology, explores the integration of biological systems, digital tools, and manufacturing techniques. Notable projects featured include structures created by silkworms, three-dimensional printed glass objects, biodegradable materials derived from organic waste, and an artificial environment for bee colonies. Her philosophy advocates for design processes that work in harmony with natural cycles rather than opposing them. Oxman is recognized for her contributions across design, architecture, biology, computer science, and material innovation. Her creations have been displayed at prominent institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Smithsonian, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Design Museum in London. The monograph is available for advance purchase ahead of its official bookstore release.
