NCCAkron Celebrates 10 Years of Supporting Dance Research

This year marks a decade since the National Center for Choreography-Akron (NCCAkron) was founded. Launched in 2015 with a generous $5 million donation from the University of Akron, Dance Cleveland, and the Knight Foundation, it’s one of just two national choreography centers in the U.S., the other being the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography in Florida. Over these ten years, NCCAkron has supported over 800 dancers through various programs and awards a $50,000 choreography prize each year. Christy Bolingbroke has been at the helm as the executive/artistic director since day one. To celebrate, a dance party is scheduled for June 20 at The Bank at The East End. Recent residencies included flamenco artists Carlos Menchaca and Angelina Ramirez, who created a piece at the University of Akron. Other notable residents have contributed unique works, with current efforts aimed at expanding their outreach beyond Akron.
