National Gallery Launches Street Art Project with Rousseau Mural Near London Zoo

A large-scale mural recreating Henri Rousseau's 1891 painting 'Surprised! (Tiger in a Tropical Storm)' has been installed on Jamestown Road in Camden, London. Measuring 40 square meters, the hand-painted artwork is situated near London Zoo in an area with approximately 1.8 million monthly pedestrians. This installation represents the inaugural project of 'Murals reMastered,' a collaborative initiative between the National Gallery and Global Street Art. The program aims to transform significant paintings from the National Gallery's collection into monumental public artworks across various UK locations. These murals will span over seven centuries of artistic production, bringing masterpieces from the Trafalgar Square institution into community spaces nationwide. The project seeks to make art accessible in unexpected public environments beyond traditional gallery settings.
