Mysterious Iron Age Structure with Human Skeleton Unearthed in Scottish Highlands

In the Scottish Highlands, archaeologists have uncovered a human skeleton in a mysterious stone-lined pit, possibly dating back to the Iron Age. This find was made by Highland Archaeology Services while they were working on a quarry expansion near Dornoch, about 200 miles north of Edinburgh. The pit is oval-shaped, measuring roughly 10 feet long, 6.5 feet wide, and 3 feet deep, and features stone walls, a slabbed bottom, and steep steps. Alongside the skeleton, they found animal bones, charcoal, a broken soapstone bowl, and a piece of a shale bangle. Experts are debating the purpose of the pit, suggesting it could be a souterrain, part of a roundhouse, or a ritual well. The skeleton is believed to belong to an adult woman, possibly buried as part of a ritual linked to the site’s closure. This location is just a mile from the ancient settlement at Camore Wood, known for its Bronze and Iron Age history. More investigations are planned, and the findings might be displayed in a local museum through Scotland's Treasure Trove system.
