Mysterious Fire Destroys Historical Museum in Crimea

A massive fire destroyed the iconic museum housing the Panorama of the Defense of Sevastopol in Crimea on June 10, during an air raid alert. The 30,000-square-meter building, which depicted the 19th-century Crimean War siege, was severely damaged. The local pro-Kremlin government blamed Ukrainian forces for a deliberate attack on cultural heritage. Officials claimed the monumental circular painting by Franz Roubaud was virtually destroyed, but museum technicians later stated that fragments of the original canvas had been saved. Ukraine's Armed Forces did not comment. Local sources noted the museum is surrounded by Russian military targets, including the Black Sea Fleet aviation headquarters and air defense command posts. Residents suggested the fire may have been caused by shrapnel or failures in anti-aircraft systems installed on nearby hills, which frequently fire at drones.
