MUMO LGBTI+ Digital Museum Launches to Preserve Brazilian Activism History

cultural-heritage · 2026-09-04

The Museu Movimento LGBTI+ (MUMO LGBTI+), a fully digital museum, has launched online to preserve and provide free access to the history of Brazil's LGBTI+ rights movement. Created by the Grupo Arco-Íris de Cidadania LGBTI+, the platform consolidates documents, images, oral histories, and cultural productions that were previously scattered across personal archives and organizations. The project originated from the Grupo Arco-Íris's own collection, expanded through activist donations, and was organized with voluntary collaboration from researchers of the Grupo de Pesquisa Museologia Experimental e Imagem, linked to the Museology course at the Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO). Structured since 2019 under the Projeto Centro de Documentação da Memória LGBTI+, the initiative evolved from a simple archive into a broader social, community, and thematic museology project, integrating physical and digital collections with exhibitions, educational activities, and research. Cláudio Nascimento, director of public policies at the Aliança Nacional LGBTI and president of Grupo Arco-Íris, emphasized the political significance: "Preserving LGBTI+ memory is a deeply political and democratic act," aiming to prevent the erasure of "our narratives, bodies, struggles, and conquests" from official history. Based in Rio de Janeiro, the museum serves activists, researchers, students, and new generations, offering free access to its digital platform.
