Milan and London Honor Zaha Hadid's Legacy on Tenth Anniversary of Her Death
Two European cities have launched commemorations marking ten years since the death of architect Zaha Hadid. Milan has officially renamed a pedestrian street in the CityLife district as Via Zaha Hadid, a location where she designed several projects including the Generali Tower. The ceremony was attended by Zaha Hadid Foundation trustee Hanif Kara and director Aric Chen. Simultaneously in London, the Zaha Hadid Foundation, Architectural Association, and Serpentine Galleries announced a symposium scheduled for October. The event will be held across three venues: the foundation's campus at 10 Bowling Green Lane, the Architectural Association, and the Serpentine Galleries. Programming will include panel discussions, presentations, and conversations examining Hadid's enduring influence, with one panel focusing on the theme of experimentation inspired by her famous mantra. Serpentine Galleries stated the aim is to combine personal memories with academic research. Chen remarked that Hadid remains profoundly significant a decade after her passing, and the symposium intends to illuminate the origins and effects of her legacy. Hadid studied and taught at the Architectural Association, designed the first Serpentine Pavilion in 2000, and served as a trustee there from 1996 until her death in 2016. Architectural Association director Ingrid Schroder noted the symposium will celebrate both Hadid's accomplishments and her personal journey, emphasizing she continues to inspire current students.
