Massive Cultural Protest in Bratislava Against Government Funding Cuts

Thousands of cultural workers and supporters gathered in Bratislava to demonstrate against the Slovakian government's cultural policies. The protest was organized by the Open Culture Platform under the slogan 'Great Culture Mobilization! Nothing like this has ever happened before.' Participants marched from the government office through the city center in a colorful procession accompanied by drums, whistles, and other loud instruments, with various performances highlighting the diversity of Slovak culture. Organizers criticized the government, particularly nationalist Culture Minister Martina Simkovicova, for creating a deep crisis in the country's cultural life. They accused authorities of silencing dissenting voices, conducting mass layoffs, and withdrawing funding from organizations and projects. All types of cultural workers have been affected by cuts, including lighting technicians, wardrobe staff, technicians, writers, actors, and producers. One banner displayed during the march referenced Count Dracula, calling the ministry a 'Drakulturministerium' for 'sucking the blood from culture.' Simkovicova was nominated by the Slovak National Party (SNS), a right-wing populist and pro-Russian minor party. Since taking office in fall 2023, she has dismissed leadership from major state cultural institutions and drastically reduced funding, particularly for alternative culture, leading critics to describe the actions as a 'clear-cutting' of the cultural sector. The protest targeted policies under Prime Minister Robert Fico's left-wing populist government.
