Mary Beard publishes 'Clásicos sin filtros' challenging classical reverence

British historian Mary Beard has released a new book, 'Clásicos sin filtros. El impacto del mundo antiguo' (Planeta), in which she examines the enduring presence of classical antiquity in contemporary life. Beard, a professor of Classics at the University of Cambridge and a professor of ancient literature at the Royal Academy of Arts, argues against uncritical veneration of ancient texts, advocating instead for astonishment, surprise, pleasure, perplexity, and even repulsion. She states, 'You can get more from the classics if you venerate them less.' The book also touches on political dimensions: Beard notes that her ideology opposes the far right but she does not believe it is her role to tell them they are not allowed to speak about the classics. The publication aims to demystify classical heritage and encourage a more critical engagement with ancient works.
