Martin Parr Mural Planned at New Brighton Seafront, Site of 'The Last Resort'

A permanent mural dedicated to the late photographer Martin Parr is set to be unveiled on the seafront of New Brighton, Merseyside, England, where he produced his renowned series 'The Last Resort'. This initiative, revealed by New Brighton Creative Futures CIC, will be created in partnership with the Martin Parr Foundation. Parr, a significant figure in British photography, passed away in December 2025 at the age of 73. His series, captured from 1983 to 1985, portrayed working-class holidaymakers at the fading seaside resort. Initially receiving mixed reviews upon its 1986 release, it has since gained recognition as a landmark in British documentary photography. Jenni Smith, director of the Martin Parr Foundation, called the mural 'poignant', while Rory Wilmer, creative director of New Brighton Creative Futures CIC, referred to it as 'our thank you' to Parr. The project is currently fundraising through GoFundMe and the organization's website, inviting local businesses to sponsor. The mural will be situated near the landscape that became iconic in Parr's most famous works.
