Mario Calabresi's Memoir Explores Family Trauma from Father's 1972 Assassination

Mario Calabresi, a journalist and writer, has published a book titled 'Spingendo la notte più in là' that examines his family's history following the murder of his father, police commissioner Luigi Calabresi, in Milan during May 1972. The work traces how the killing, which occurred when Calabresi's mother was pregnant with their third child, fractured the family. Calabresi began researching the incident as a teenager, skipping school to read period newspapers at the Sormani library. He structures the narrative around six symbolic memories: his grandfather, mail, a note, a premonition, a gun, and a promise. The book represents his attempt to use language to understand the public and private dimensions of the tragedy and to push back against the darkness surrounding these events.
