Malatheatre's Living Paintings: 23 Caravaggio Masterpieces Recreated in Tableaux Vivants

A video performance by the Neapolitan company Malatheatre, founded by the late Ludovica Rambelli, has achieved global success by recreating 23 masterpieces by Caravaggio as tableaux vivants. The project originated from a lecture on Caravaggio's working method given by Rambelli at the University of Naples. Actors on stage, with minimal scenic support, reconstruct the complex emotional compositions of the Baroque genius in just a few minutes, delving deep into the pathos of the original works. Filmed by Simone Calcagni, the three-minute video features reinterpretations of Italian art milestones including "The Entombment of Christ" from the Vatican Pinacoteca, "Judith Beheading Holofernes," "The Flagellation of Christ," "The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew," "The Annunciation," "The Crucifixion of Saint Peter," "Rest on the Flight into Egypt," "Saint Francis of Assisi in Ecstasy," and "The Raising of Lazarus."
