Maison de la Magie in Blois: A Bourgeois Home Transformed by Robert-Houdin's Eccentric Legacy
The Maison de la Magie in Blois, a 19th-century bourgeois mansion opposite the Royal Castle of Blois, has been turned into a museum-theater dedicated to magic and illusionist Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin (1805–1871). The building, built in 1856, features six dragon heads designed by Michell and Jean-Pierre Hartmann in 1998 that emerge from windows to surprise passersby. Robert-Houdin, known as the "father of modern magic," was born in Blois and invented numerous tricks still used by magicians today. His collection of objects, donated to the city in 1981 by his grandson Paul Robert-Houdin, fills the museum's five floors (2,000 square meters). The institution, opened in 1998, offers three to four shows daily, combining a museum with live performances. It showcases Robert-Houdin's early passion for mechanics and clockmaking (his father was a clockmaker), his many inventions, and his reputed supernatural powers. In 1855, Napoleon III sent him to Algeria to counter marabouts who were inciting rebellion, where Robert-Houdin posed as a sorcerer. The museum also features numerous optical illusions appealing to younger visitors.
