Magnum Book Club Features Salih Basheer's Photobook on Sudanese Displacement

Magnum Photos' Book Club highlights Salih Basheer's photobook 'The Return,' which documents the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The project began in April 2023 when Basheer was visiting family in Khartoum as civil war erupted between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces. The conflict has displaced nearly 12 million people and caused approximately 150,000 deaths. Basheer traveled to neighboring countries to collect portraits and testimonies from exiles, blending personal narrative with broader accounts. The book combines images, collages, drawings, and text to emphasize human experiences amid limited international coverage. It aims to shed light on what the United Nations terms the world's largest humanitarian crisis.
