Madeira's Historical and Architectural Landmarks from Portuguese Discovery to UNESCO Heritage
The Madeira archipelago, first recorded in 1385 and discovered by Portuguese explorers João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira in 1418, is home to many historically significant locations. Settlers, including Bartolomeu Perestrelo, began colonization in 1425 under King João I. Originally, the Laurisilva Forest, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, covered much of the island. Early exports consisted of cedar, yew wood, and dyes, while sugar cane was introduced by Prince Henry the Navigator around 1450. By the 17th century, wine emerged as the primary export. Important landmarks include the Sé do Funchal Cathedral (1493-1517), Convento de Santa Clara (1489-1497), and Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias (1887). The Madeira Ethnographic Museum, established in 1996, displays local artifacts.
