Lomazzo Celebrates Centenary of Sculptor Francesco Somaini with Citywide Program

The town of Lomazzo, Italy, is honoring its native son Francesco Somaini (1926–2005) with a centenary program titled 'Un'eredità viva a Lomazzo. Francesco Somaini 1926-2005' running from July 12 to October 2026. The initiative features a public installation of Somaini's black resin sculpture 'Fortunia vincitrice' (1997-2000) in Via Cavour, a photographic exhibition of behind-the-scenes shots, and a documentary short film. Performances, workshops, and theater events are scheduled, including a dance performance on July 12, a film screening on August 14, and theater by Kepler-452 on September 26. Somaini, trained at Brera under Giacomo Manzù and influenced by Surrealism, won the international sculpture prize at the 1959 São Paulo Biennial. His works are held by MoMA, Centre Pompidou, and Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna. The program is promoted by the Comune di Lomazzo and Fondazione Somaini, with Luisa Somaini as curator.
