La Roche-sur-Yon suspends Napoleon museum project, rethinks focus

cultural-heritage · 2026-06-25

The new municipal government of La Roche-sur-Yon, led by a left-leaning coalition, has indefinitely postponed the planned Napoleon museum, citing a dire budget situation. The previous administration had allocated €11 million for the project, with annual operating costs of €900,000, deemed unsustainable. First deputy mayor for culture Martine Chantecaille stated the city will instead prioritize local associations and cultural organizations. The museum concept is being reoriented away from a Napoleonic focus toward the city's existing collections, which include a notable contemporary photography collection featuring Jeff Wall, Cindy Sherman, and Andreas Gursky, a 19th-century painting collection including works by Paul Baudry, and illustrations by Benjamin Rabier. The former Conservatory building on Place Napoléon remains the most likely site, but its structural issues require evaluation. A decision on location and configuration is expected by September 2026, with construction possibly starting in 2027. Meanwhile, some works are displayed at the temporary Espace Malraux, a former kindergarten used since 2023 after the sale of the old museum building.
