Kyiv Theater Reimagines Homer's Odyssey with Soldiers Amid War

In Kyiv, amidst the ongoing conflict, the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater is presenting "Odyssey. Maeotis," a modern adaptation of Homer's classic that incorporates the realities faced by Ukrainian soldiers and civilians. Directed by Ivan Uryvskyi, the cast includes both professional actors and active-duty military personnel, such as Daniil Mireshkin from the 1st Corps Azov, who portrays Odysseus, and Daryna Leheida as Penelope. Instead of mythical creatures like Cyclops and sirens, the play introduces drones and robotic machines, mirroring contemporary warfare. The narrative emphasizes the theme of return, linking Odysseus's journey to the yearning of soldiers for home and their families’ anticipation. "Maeotis," the ancient name for the Sea of Azov, references Mariupol, captured by Russia in 2022, and the play draws on testimonies from Azov defenders, including interviews conducted by playwright Oleksii Dorychevskyi. The premiere has faced multiple delays due to Russian assaults and seeks to explore the vital question of returning—whether to civilian life, territories, or Ukrainian identity. This production coincides with a global focus on Homer's Odyssey, aligning with Christopher Nolan's IMAX film "The Odyssey," featuring Matt Damon. The final rehearsal occurred on August 25, 2026, prior to the premiere.
