Keith Haring's 1989 AIDS Awareness Mural in Barcelona

American artist Keith Haring created a public mural titled 'Todos Juntos Podemos Parar el SIDA' (Together We Can Stop AIDS) in Barcelona's El Raval neighborhood on February 27, 1989. The work, measuring 34 meters wide, was painted in red plastic paint on a concrete wall at Plaça Salvador Seguí. Haring, diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, produced the piece as an activist statement during the global epidemic. The original mural deteriorated and was defaced, leading the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) to recreate it in 1996 near its entrance and again in 2014 for the 25th anniversary, in collaboration with the Keith Haring Foundation and Barcelona City Council. The artwork features symbolic imagery including a snake representing AIDS, figures with scissors cutting it, condom placement, and references to stigma. It sparked mixed local reactions but has become a significant part of Haring's legacy and Barcelona's cultural landscape.
