Javier Sebaste Crafts Historical Canvases for Contemporary Artists and Collectors

Javier Sebaste, an engineer and artisan based in Madrid, has been researching and recreating historical painting canvases since 2020. His project, Sebaste lienzos, produces handwoven textiles using natural fibers like linen and hemp, replicating the supports found in X-rays of works by 16th-century masters such as Velázquez, El Greco, and Goya. These canvases serve contemporary artists seeking authenticity and collectors who value them as standalone artworks. Sebaste has collaborated with institutions including the Museo del Prado on the Aracne project and works with international artists like Luis Borrero. Plans include a New York exhibition with Borrero in late 2026.
