Intimate Romanov Photos Reveal Everyday Life of Russia's Last Imperial Family

Thousands of personal photographs of Russia's last imperial family, the Romanovs, have been preserved in archives, museums, and private collections, offering an intimate glimpse into their daily lives. The images, many taken by the five children with Kodak Brownie cameras, capture vacations, hobbies like tennis and bicycling, and candid moments such as Anastasia smoking her father's cigarette or wearing false teeth. The family spent evenings pasting photos into albums, with Anastasia and Maria hand-colorizing some. The photos humanize a family that fiercely guarded its privacy, contradicting their public image as aloof. The Romanovs were executed by Bolsheviks on July 16-17, 1918, after Nicholas II abdicated in March 1917 amid the Russian Revolution. Historian Helen Rappaport notes the haunting quality of seeing the four grand duchesses and heir Alexei, whose hemophilia led the family to rely on Rasputin. The photos survived Soviet efforts to destroy them; six albums were smuggled out by Anna Vyrubova and are now at Yale's Beinecke Library. The last known images of the children date to May 1918 aboard a steamer to Yekaterinburg, where they were killed.
