This week, authorities detained five staff members from two bookstores in Hong Kong for purportedly breaching the national security law enacted in 2024, which prohibits 'seditious content.' Victoria Hui, a specialist in Chinese politics cited by the New York Times, characterized these arrests as indicative of a wider assault on bookstores, which she referred to as 'one of the last places for people to engage with ideas, forge social connections, and maintain an intellectual community.' An artist who previously escaped Hong Kong expressed to the Guardian, 'We fear the loss of Hong Kong's culture, yet it might emerge anew across the globe.'
