Historic Landmarks of Angra do Heroísmo: A UNESCO World Heritage City in the Azores

Angra do Heroísmo, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, is a historic city located on Terceira Island in the Azores, Portugal. Established between 1420 and 1430, it became the first city in the Azores in 1534 and served as a crucial port for maritime trade among Europe, Africa, and India. During the period of Spanish governance from 1580 to 1640, fortifications were constructed. The city emerged as a hub for liberal thought and was briefly designated as Portugal's capital during the Civil War, which led to its renaming to honor local bravery. Notable sites include Sé de Angra, Misericórdia Church, São Francisco Church, and Palácio dos Capitães-Generais, alongside fortresses like São Sebastião and São João Baptista. The obelisk at Alto da Memória honors King Pedro IV's arrival.
