Historic Denby Pottery Faces Administration, Threatening 600 Jobs

Denby, a pottery manufacturer with over two centuries of history based in Derbyshire, is preparing to appoint administrators, endangering nearly 600 positions. The company, which also owns the Burleigh brand in Stoke-on-Trent, has encountered financial difficulties due to increased gas and labor expenses, tighter financial conditions, and reduced consumer interest in its high-end homeware products. Earlier in March, CEO Sebastian Lazell expressed efforts to rescue the business, while a public campaign emerged to boost sales and seek government assistance. Administrators from FRP are expected to be appointed, with operations continuing during the search for a buyer. Recent financial reports indicate a 17% decline in sales to £18.6 million and a sharp drop in pre-tax profits to £86,000, attributed to geopolitical and inflationary pressures. GMB union representative Craig Thomson criticized government inaction, highlighting energy costs as a critical issue for the ceramics sector and emphasizing community support efforts. This situation follows similar challenges in the industry, including the administration of Royal Stafford pottery last year and Moorcroft in May, amid broader struggles for consumer goods firms facing weak spending and rising costs. For instance, the jewelry retailer Claire's has recently closed stores and reduced staff under administration. The manufacturing sector overall is grappling with energy price surges linked to international conflicts, potentially leading to further cuts and closures.
