Hispanic Society Museum Acquires Rare 1927 Wifredo Lam Portrait from Spanish Period

The Hispanic Society Museum and Library in New York has welcomed its first Cuban artist piece, Wifredo Lam's 1927 artwork titled "Portrait of a Boy." Director Guillaume Kientz revealed that the painting originated from a private collection in Cuenca, Spain, where it was sold at a Sotheby's auction late last year. This portrait, created during Lam’s early years in Spain, includes the handwritten note "para Hugo," suggesting it was a gift to Hugo Dosantos. It marks a pivotal moment in Lam's artistic journey before he developed his renowned style. Kientz highlighted its significance in enhancing the museum's Caribbean art collection and its connection to 19th-20th century works. The painting is now displayed at the museum, illustrating Lam's artistic growth.
