Helios Gómez: Romani Artist's Revolutionary Life and Art Against Fascism

Born in Seville's Triana quarter to a Romani family from rural Andalusia, Helios Gómez channeled his political convictions through art. His early work in ceramics factories and studies at the School of Craft and Art coincided with anarchist and communist activism, drawing frequent arrests across multiple countries. During the Spanish Civil War, he organized a Romani battalion and later helped establish the secret resistance group Liberación Nacional Republicana. His 1937 painting Evacuation, housed at the Museu Nacional D'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona, depicts refugees with stylistic nods to El Greco and Francisco Goya, using ochre, orange, and brown tones to convey despair. The work anticipated the 1939 Retirada, when nearly half a million fled to France, where Romani faced particular hostility in overcrowded camps. After escaping French and Algerian concentration camps in 1942, Gómez returned to Spain, was imprisoned without trial from 1946 to 1954, and created the Capilla Gitana frescoes on his cell walls in 1950, later destroyed by authorities. He died in 1956, having been arrested over 70 times for challenging stereotypes and advocating Romani integration. His works En el Cafe Cantante (1928) are held at La Virreina Centre in Barcelona.
