Hannah Häffner's Debut Novel 'Die Riesinnen' Explores Generational Stories and Homeland

Hannah Häffner, born in Heidelberg in 1985, has published her literary debut novel 'Die Riesinnen,' which has appeared on bestseller lists since its release in late February. The work is a generational narrative following three women—Liese, Cora, and Eva Riessberger—from the 1950s to the present in the fictional Black Forest village of Wittenmoos. The characters, who are taller than average, face skepticism and envy from villagers as they build independent lives while largely remaining in their hometown. Häffner discussed the novel during a walk in Stuttgart's Unterer Schlossgarten in late March, reflecting on themes of home, belonging, and self-reinvention. She noted that the concept of 'Heimat' (homeland) remains relevant for many, though choosing where to live can be both a privilege and a challenge. Häffner, who lives near Stuttgart with her family, studied European studies and political science before working as a copywriter at Jung von Matt, creating campaigns for clients like Mercedes. She previously authored three crime novels—'Nordseenacht' (2020), 'Nebelküste,' and 'Dunkle See'—published by Goldmann Verlag. Häffner described writing as an inner necessity, emphasizing that she would continue even without public recognition. She attended the Leipzig Book Fair, where she read to audiences, and expressed hope to continue her writing career, acknowledging that each new book must find its own readership.
