Great Barrier Reef Faces Severe Coral Bleaching in 2024

The Great Barrier Reef experienced its fifth mass bleaching event in eight years during 2024, marking the fourth global bleaching event recorded by NOAA. For the first time, all three sectors of the reef were impacted. At Lizard Island, where the Lizard Island Research Station has monitored conditions for over five decades, bleaching became evident in February as water temperatures rose. By mid-April, mortality rates for Acropora corals in shallow waters exceeded 80%. This event follows significant recovery from previous devastation between 2014 and 2017, which included cyclones and a marine heatwave. Researchers note that bleaching has occurred annually at Lizard Island from 2020 to 2024, indicating increasing frequency of such events. While the 2024 situation is less severe than 2016/17, it ranks as the second worst, with deeper water corals showing better resilience. The ongoing research highlights critical environmental changes affecting marine ecosystems.
