Gray Wolf BEY03F's Historic Journey Through California Counties Documented by Wildlife Officials

A three-year-old female gray wolf, identified as BEY03F, has been tracked across several counties in California using remote cameras and GPS technology. She was born in Plumas County in 2023 and received a GPS collar in May 2025. Her initial photograph was captured in Tulare County on April 16, 2025, with a return sighting on January 13, 2026. By February 7, 2026, she had arrived in Los Angeles County, which marked the first confirmed wolf sighting there in nearly a century. She then moved to Kern County by February 9 and entered Inyo County, becoming the first documented wolf in Eastern Sierra County in over a century. Experts believe her wanderings may be motivated by a search for a mate. Once nearly eradicated in the U.S. by the mid-20th century, gray wolves now number around 6,000, including at least 70 in California.
