institutional · 2026-03-31

The Grand-Est region of France is developing a specialized campus dedicated to artisanal crafts, design, and object creation. This initiative, known as the Campus of Excellence for Art Trades, Design and Objects (CMQE MADO), aims to enhance the visibility of regional craftsmanship and promote its international recognition. The project is led by Alexis Claudel, director of the Boutet-de-Monvel vocational arts high school. The campus will feature a strategic orientation committee, a steering committee, and working groups. Currently, the proposal is awaiting official certification from the French Ministry of Culture. The Grand-Est area is renowned for its glass and crystal manufacturers such as Lalique, Daum, Saint-Louis, and Baccarat, along with diverse artisanal skills including Longwy enamels and Fayl-Billot basketry. The craft sector in the region supports over 16,000 specialized businesses and 55 apprentice training centers with at least one art trade program. This development seeks to strengthen educational pathways and economic opportunities in traditional and contemporary craft fields.
