Global Amphibian Assessment Reveals Worsening Extinction Crisis

A comprehensive global assessment of amphibians published in Nature shows continued deterioration in conservation status, with 40.7% of species now threatened with extinction. The study, involving over 1,000 experts worldwide, updates the 2004 IUCN Red List assessment and identifies climate change as an emerging threat affecting a quarter of threatened species. While habitat loss remains the primary driver, four additional species have been declared extinct since 2004. The report highlights regional variations, with Australia showing nearly one in five frog species at risk. Despite sobering findings, conservation efforts have improved status for 120 species since 1980.
