Giuseppe De Santis’ Neorealist Classics Return to Theaters in Restored Versions

Two of the most celebrated films of Italian neorealism, Giuseppe De Santis’ “Riso amaro” (Bitter Rice) and “La strada lunga” (Pâques sanglantes), are being re-released in French theaters in newly restored versions. The films, considered masterpieces of the post-war movement, will be available for rediscovery from June 17, 2026. The restoration aims to preserve the original visual and audio quality for contemporary audiences. De Santis, a key figure in neorealism, is known for his socially engaged cinema that often focused on the lives of the working class and marginalized communities. “Riso amaro” (1949) stars Silvana Mangano and Doris Dowling, while “Pâques sanglantes” (1954) features Raf Vallone and Elena Varzi. The re-release offers a chance to experience these influential works in their best possible form.
