Georgia Oakley’s ‘Sense and Sensibility’ Adaptation Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones Gets First Look

This October, director Georgia Oakley’s film adaptation of Jane Austen’s ‘Sense and Sensibility’ will hit theaters, with Vogue providing an exclusive first glimpse. The cast features Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor Dashwood, Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne Dashwood, Bodhi Rae Breathnach as Margaret, and Caitríona Balfe as Mrs. Dashwood, alongside George MacKay, Frank Dillane, and Fiona Shaw. The screenplay is penned by novelist Diana Reid. Known for her work on ‘Blue Jean,’ Oakley explores the Dashwood sisters' vulnerable social standing following their father's death, which compels them to leave Norland Park in Sussex for a humble cottage in Devonshire. She emphasizes authenticity, steering clear of idealized representations, and cites influences such as ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’ and ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire.’ The production team includes Francesca Di Mottola (production designer), Grace Snell (costume designer), and Arnaud Potier (cinematographer). Edgar-Jones and Creed-Miles previously collaborated on the 2018 film ‘Pond Life.’ Oakley aspires for the film to resonate with viewers who may not be familiar with Austen’s work or earlier adaptations, including Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning 1995 version.
