George Sand's Berry region prepares for 150th death anniversary

In June 2026, the Berry region of central France will commemorate the 150th anniversary of George Sand's passing. Sand, who died on June 8, 1876, resided in Nohant, where her home remains intact with original furnishings and her puppet theater. Notable visitors included Eugène Delacroix and Alexandre Dumas fils. The head gardener is rejuvenating the park's roses inspired by Sand's literary works. Her landscapes are depicted in her autobiography 'Histoire de ma vie' and in novels such as 'La Petite Fadette'. The village of Gargilesse-Dampierre plans to enlarge her villa Algira. The Musée George Sand in La Châtre will move its collections to Château de Gargilesse for exhibitions through 2030. Restoration of frescoes at Église Saint-Martin and Église Notre-Dame has been finalized, and a committee is advocating for Sand's recognition in the Panthéon.
