Genetic Adaptation in High-Altitude Animals May Inspire Nerve Damage Therapies
A study published March 13 in Neuron reveals that a genetic mutation found in Tibetan Plateau animals like yaks could inform treatments for neurological conditions. Researchers from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine discovered that the Retsat gene variant helps maintain myelin sheaths in low-oxygen environments. Experiments with mice showed the mutation improved myelin regeneration and cognitive functions under oxygen deprivation, and accelerated recovery from artificially induced nerve damage resembling multiple sclerosis. The mechanism involves converting ATDR molecules to boost oligodendrocyte production. While promising for conditions like cerebral palsy and MS, experts note further research is needed before human applications.
