François Pinault's Bourse de Commerce Opens in Paris After Two-Decade Journey

In May 2021, François Pinault's museum debuted at the Bourse de Commerce, a neoclassical structure revamped by Tadao Ando. Pinault obtained a 50-year lease from Anne Hidalgo, the Mayor of Paris, in 2016, following unsuccessful attempts to establish a museum on a Seine island in 2000. The €160 million renovation updated the former grain exchange, with Ando adding a concrete cylinder for exhibition areas. The opening exhibition, titled 'Ouverture,' showcases works by Urs Fischer, Bertrand Lavier, Maurizio Cattelan, and includes a retrospective of David Hammons. Other featured artists are Miriam Cahn, Peter Doig, and Cindy Sherman. The museum, lacking foundation status, charges €14 for tickets and has annual fees around €60,000, indicating a trend towards private institutions in Paris.
