Field Notes Releases 'Foiled Again' Limited Edition Notebooks with Studio on Fire Collaboration

publication · 2026-03-31

Field Notes has launched its 59th Quarterly Edition titled 'Foiled Again,' a limited release that highlights the art of hot-foil stamping. This printing technique, which applies metallic or pigmented foils using heat and pressure, originated from a patent by German inventor Ernst Oeser in 1892 and saw advancements with plastic-based foils in the 1950s. The edition is produced in collaboration with Studio on Fire, a St. Paul, Minnesota-based studio recognized for its expertise in foil-stamping and die-cutting across various industries. The notebooks feature artwork by Aaron Draplin, hot-stamped in silver foil on Neenah Pearl 'Indigo' cover stock, with interiors containing 48 pages of Finch Opaque text lined in silver ink and bound with three staples. A complementary tuck box reverses the color scheme, using blue foil on Neenah Pearl 'Sterling' stock to protect three notebooks. Subscribers receive an exclusive version with gold foil on 'Poppy' stock in a red-foil-on-'Bright Gold' box. The edition has a limited print run of 26,000 3-packs due to its intricate design, and it is manufactured in the United States using specific materials and equipment, such as a Saroglia FUB Die Cutter Foil Stamper and a Heidelberg ST350 Stitchmaster. Field Notes, founded in 2007 and based in Chicago, is a joint venture between Draplin Design Company and Coudal Partners. Future editions for Fall, Winter, and Spring are anticipated.
