Eurispes Report 2026: Culture as Economic and Social Driver in Italy

Italy's cultural heritage is not merely a historical asset but a strategic lever for economic development, education, and social cohesion, according to the Eurispes Italia 2026 Report. With 60 UNESCO sites, 20 intangible cultural heritage elements, and 14 Creative Cities, Italy leads globally in heritage valorization. In 2024, state museums and galleries attracted 18.7 million visitors generating €147 million, while archaeological sites drew 31.5 million visitors yielding €119 million. The report's analysis across 135 provinces reveals a significant correlation between cultural density and education levels, with Lazio exemplifying high heritage concentration and top educational indicators. Cultural and Creative Industries (ICC) generate over €112 billion in added value (5.7% of Italy's economy) and employ 1.5 million workers, with indirect effects exceeding €300 billion (over 15% of the economy). ICCs also foster urban regeneration, social inclusion, and civic participation, supported by the Third Sector. The report highlights the National Fire Brigade's role in protecting cultural heritage during emergencies. Eurispes concludes that culture is a strategic resource for innovation, economic growth, and social well-being, essential for addressing demographic, technological, and economic transitions.
